Three Keys To Choosing A Good Boat Trailer

Clara Graves

When you buy a boat, it is easy to focus on the actual boat you will be hauling, but you also need to consider what you will be hauling the boat with. There is not a standard design for boat trailers, so to make sure that you can get a trailer that you can depend on for years to come you need to know what to look for.

Suspension

As you are driving down a road, you need to make sure your boat is not jostled too badly, which can make the boat come off of your trailer and/or damage your boat in other ways. Most trailers will use leaf suspension, which consists of a series of flat metal bars, which are stacked on each other and then attached to the trailer between your axles and the body of the trailer. Some trailers will have only three leaves, but you will get better support from a five-leaf trailer.

Material

A trailer made from steel will be durable, but steel and water don't mix. Thus, steel trailers are typically painted, and as long as this paint stays intact, you should not have to worry about your trailer corroding. If, however, you get a scratch, you will need to touch up your paint job, or get a new one, so you don't have to worry about rust. Thus, if you buy a steel trailer, you increase your maintenance load. On the other hand, if you buy an aluminum trailer, aluminum does not corrode, so you never have to worry about your trailer rusting away to nothing.

Rollers vs. Bunks

To support your boat while it is on your trailer as well as to help guide your boat onto your trailer, trailer designers will use either rollers or bunks. The beauty of a roller is that it reduces friction, which should make it easier to guide your trailer onto your boat. Also the rollers are less likely to scuff the sides of your boat. On the other hand, vertical bunks will provide more support for your boat while it is going down the road or in storage. Thus, a combination of well-placed rollers and bunks is the ideal combination.

In order to ensure that your boat stays viable for the long haul, you need to make sure that you buy a quality trailer. While a boat might be more likely to draw your eye when making a purchase, inspecting both boat and trailer will help you to get the best deal for your money.
